Biden Calls for ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban in Wake of UNLV Handgun Attack

(ConservativeSense.com) – President Biden has revived his call for an “assault weapons” ban after three people were murdered at the University of Las Vegas (UNLV). The shooter in the UNLV incident used a handgun, but President Biden made the statement before this information was known. Biden once again declared that he could not make any further progress on gun violence without the consent of Congress, and he called on Republicans to join with Democrats to “ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines,” among other measures.

The Las Vegas shooting took place on the morning of December 6 at the Lee Business School building, where the gunman murdered three people and injured one more before police shot and killed him.

Local law enforcement officers said the gunman was 67-year-old Anthony James Polito, who had sent several letters to the university prior to the attack. It is believed that the motivation was repeated job application rejections. Polito had a criminal record for computer trespass but no history of violence, and the handgun he used was legally purchased. Officers said the gunman had a “target list” that included professors at UNLV and a university in North Carolina, where he was once employed.

Joe Biden’s call for more gun control came only days after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he intended to revive the Brady laws enacted in 1994 with the support of then-Senator Biden and signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

Pointing to mass shootings across the US in recent years, Mr. Schumer said, “People want action, and they want the assault weapons ban again. The American people are tired of fearing for their lives.”

The National Rifle Association, however, accused Mr. Schumer of launching an attack on “the Constitution itself.” Executive Director Randy Kozuch called Democrat Schumer a “gun control extremist” and received the backing of Republican Wyoming Senator John Barrasso, who declared that the new proposals would amount to a burden on people who already follow the law.
