(ConservativeSense.com) – Former Vice President Mike Pence said Donald Trump should not be allowed to become President of the United States because he has placed himself above the Constitution. Pence, who served as Vice President under Trump, turned his back on his former boss after the events of January 6th, 2021, which he blames on Mr. Trump.
“I believe that anyone who puts themselves over the Constitution should never be president of the United States, and anyone who asks someone else to put them over the Constitution should never be president of the United States again,” he said.
The former VP was referring to the events of January 6th when he said Trump pressured him to overturn the election results. Trump firmly denies this and said he merely asked Mr. Pence to return the votes to the states so that state legislatures could “determine if the irregularities and fraud were as widespread and significant as they seemed.”
Mike Pence officially launched his bid to become President of the United States on June 7th in Iowa. He spent much of his launch criticizing President Trump who he said had abandoned conservatism. He warned his audience not to be swayed by Trump’s personality or populism. He also attacked the former President as soft on abortion.
“The sanctity of life has been our party’s calling for half a century, long before Donald Trump was ever a part of it,” he said. He claimed Trump found the abortion debate an “inconvenience” and condemned him for warning Republicans that a hard stance on abortion was sending voters to the Democrats. Trump insists there should always be exemptions on the grounds of incest or rape and has urged Republicans to emphasize these exceptions or lose votes to the left.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade last year, Republican candidates have found themselves divided. Democrats seized on the issue, and it paid off. For example, in April’s Wisconsin Supreme Court race, the Democratic candidate focused on abortion and took a comfortable win.
