Iran: US Gives Israel ‘Green Light’ to Attack Consulate in Syria

( – Iran has accused the US of giving the “green light” to Israel to attack its consulate in Syria. Seven Iranian officials died, including two generals, in an Israeli strike, and Iran has vowed to retaliate. In a speech to mark the end of Ramadan, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said he considered the attack in the Syrian capital as an assault on Iranian soil and described the Jewish state as “an evil regime.”

Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, told reporters in Damascus that America is responsible for what analysts say is the most significant blow to Iran since the Trump administration assassinated General Qassim Soleimani in 2020. The latest Israeli strike killed General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one of the most senior figures in Iran’s fearsome Revolutionary Guards.

Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz promised to attack Iran if it retaliated for the General’s death.

Meanwhile, Iran-backed militants Hezbollah continue to exchange fire with Israeli Defense Force (IDF) troops while Iraqi groups attack US forces in Syria and Iraq. Houthi militants furthermore maintain their strikes against commercial ships in the Red Sea.

After the latest Israeli attack, which the Jewish state has not acknowledged, Amirabdollahian visited Oman to meet Houthi leaders before traveling to Damascus. He accused Israel of attempting to start a regional war and warned that its embassies are not safe.

Houthi commander Mohamed Abdel-Salam told Amirabdollahian that strikes in the Red Sea, as well as the Aden Gulf, will continue and specifically target vessels from nations allied with Israel or traveling toward the Jewish state.

An Israeli spokesperson would not confirm the consulate attack, as it typically refuses to do in such circumstances. The Biden administration said the developments are concerning, and intelligence services caution that Iranian retaliation against Israeli consulates is now likely.

A spokesperson for the US National Security Council replied to Iran’s claims that America authorized the strike in Syria, saying they are “simply wrong” and an example of “Iranian spin.”
