(ConservativeSense.com) – Officials in the Texas City of El Paso were seen arresting migrants and removing them from streets and bus shelters prior to the visit of President Biden. A homeless shelter volunteer who shot a video of the incident said around 100 to 150 migrants had been taken into custody. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) said the arrests were in response to migrants evading apprehension. However, the convenient timing means that Biden did not see what the residents of El Paso have seen every day since their city was deluged with illegal immigrants late last year. In December, Mayor Oscar Leeser declared a state of emergency when more than 1,600 arrived in a single day.
Biden was greeted in El Paso on January 8th by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, one of his fiercest critics. “The president who caused the chaos at the border needed to be here. It just so happens he’s two years and about $20 billion too late,” he told reporters at the airport. He also said that the federal government should reimburse Texas for the money it has spent taking care of illegal immigrants.
In a scathing tweet regarding the clearance of city streets, the official union of the US Border Patrol wrote, “El Paso being cleaned up as if nothing unusual ever happened there. Just in time for Biden’s visit to the border. We suggest just landing in Des Moines, Iowa and telling him it’s El Paso. He’ll never know the difference.”
The President visited the southern border for the first time just days after announcing policies that would allow an extra 30,000 immigrants to enter the US from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua every month. Some campaigners for controlled borders say this will make matters worse and does nothing to address the problem of illegal migration or the crisis faced by El Paso and similar cities.
