(ConservativeSense.com) – Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) is leading a group of Republicans demanding answers from the Navy on why a drag queen was chosen to be one of five “Digital Ambassadors.” The group wrote to Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, saying the inclusion of a drag queen at a time of low recruitment would drive people away.
“The Biden Administration’s Department of the Navy continues to implement radical, reckless, and woke policies that deter capable recruits from volunteering to defend this Nation’s freedoms,” the letter stated.
The signatories are Eli Crane (AZ), C. Scott Franklin (FL), Ronny Jackson (TX), Guy Reschenthaler (PA), Mike Garcia (CA), Dan Crenshaw (TX), Andy Harris (MD), and Morgan Luttrell (TX).
The drag queen in question is Navy Yeoman 2nd Class Joshua Kelley, who goes by the name “Harpy Daniels” on social media. Kelley identifies as “non-binary” and frequently posts clips on Instagram and Twitter wearing women’s clothing and make-up. He says he “spreads joy” in the Navy and has even won $1000 for coming second place in a lip-synching contest on board the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan.
The Pennsylvania native said drag is his number one passion and he joined the Navy for financial stability. His father also served and he grew up in a Navy household. He adds that his father is supportive of his drag performances.
The increasingly “woke” Navy held a “diversity, equity, and inclusion summit” last year to increase recruitment. A Black Lives Matter representative was the keynote speaker at the event. Frans Johansson says leaders must “understand the systems that create inequities in the ecosystems in which their companies operate.”
The GOP lawmakers have asked Del Toro to provide all documents and communications related to recruitment and retention and details of how much taxpayer money was spent on the Digital Ambassador program. They also asked the Navy Secretary to confirm if the US Navy is ready to face military challenges from overseas enemies.
