(ConservativeSense.com) -The UK government will move forward with banning private prescriptions for minors to obtain puberty blockers as a part of so-called “gender-affirming care,” a landmark decision leading into the nation’s general election and one that American lawmakers will surely be looking at leading into the US elections as well.
The new emergency regulations were announced on Wednesday, May 29, by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and will restrict “puberty-suppressing hormones” from being prescribed to young people in England, Scotland, and Wales who are below the age of 18.
The emergency ban will only be temporary, lasting from June 3 ro September, 2024, and applies to private prescriptions and those registered in Switzerland or the European Economic Area (EEA). The decision comes after the UK National Health Service (NHS) halted routine puberty blocker prescriptions for minors after a 400-page review into “gender-affirming care” by Dr. Hilary Cass.
That report took over three years to compile and uncovered evidence that using the controversial drugs on minors was “not reliable” as a treatment for gender dysphoria and that the research justifying such treatments was of “poor quality.” The UK government also put indefinite restrictions in place for prescribing the medications as a part of England’s NHS primary care program and in line with its guidelines.
A national review of the drugs in April found “no good evidence” from these interventions over long-term periods. The latest restrictions apply to drugs called “gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues,” and consist of substances such as gonadorelin, buserelin, leuprorelin acetate, triptorelin, nafarelin, and goserelin.
The development in Britain is the latest in the ongoing battle in the West over gender ideology and transgenderism. Those opposed to the idea in the US are also making legislative strides to restrict access to drugs and surgeries used in the so-called “treatments,” with many states passing outright bans for minors. It’s also become one of the dividing lines between Republicans and Democrats.
