(ConservativeSense.com) – Vice President Kamala Harris has condemned Ron DeSantis and his rejection of the teaching of critical race theory in schools. Harris described DeSantis as an “extremist.”
Speaking to State House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell and Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book, the Vice President said, “Every student in our nation should be able to learn about the culture, contributions, and experiences of all Americans – including black Americans – who shaped our history. Unfortunately, in Florida, extremist so-called leaders ban books, block history classes, and prevent teachers freely discussing who they are and who they love.”
Critical race theory promotes the notion that white people are privileged and black people oppressed and is therefore detrimental to racial harmony. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banned its teaching in the state’s schools in April 2022. He also prevented teachers from telling their often very young pupils about their private and intimate lives.
The Vice President’s remarks come only days after the College Board – the organization that sets the SAT test and Advance Placement program – launched a new course entitled AP African-American Studies (APAAS). The course is to be piloted at 60 schools that have not been named and the curriculum has not been publicly released.
The College Board has denied that the new course teaches critical race theory, but the DeSantis administration has already said it will not allow it to be taught in Florida. The state’s Department of Education said, “The content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value.”
Despite insisting the course does not teach critical race theory, it has been described as an injection of Marxism into American schools. In 2022, author and former Harvard University professor Stanley Kurtz obtained a copy of the secretive curriculum. He wrote, “APAAS clearly proselytizes for a socialist transformation of the United States, although its socialism is heavily inflected by attention to race and ethnicity.”
