(ConservativeSense.com) – Thousands of migrants lined the US southern border as Title 42 ended. The legislation is no longer in effect as of May 11th, and footage from the border reveals clashes between immigrants and Texas law enforcement agencies. National Guardsmen from the Lone Star State set up physical barriers on the northern side of the Rio Grande as migrants attempted to cross.
The Donald Trump administration invoked Title 42 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. It allows the United States to deport foreign nationals immediately and without any duty to hear asylum claims. It was due to expire last December, but a group of 19 GOP-led states petitioned the Supreme Court successfully, and it was kept in place until now.
Border control and immigration agencies say Title 42 allowed them to refuse entry to almost 3 million people since 2020.
As chaos erupted in the south, House Republicans in Washington, DC, passed new legislation to restore order. There was no support from Democrats as the Secure the Border Act of 2023 passed 219 to 213.
The new law would restart construction on Trump’s border wall, end catch and release, increase the number of border patrol agents, and require asylum seekers to make their claims from Mexico.
The legislation is unlikely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate, and President Biden has said he will veto it if it reaches his desk.
Meanwhile, Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis gave his backing to proposals for federal reform that allows states to enact their own border and migration strategies and avoid the impact of poor White House policies. The Governor spoke after signing new legislation making Florida the largest state in America to apply e-Verify checks to job applicants. E-Verify is an internet-based system that allows employers to view the immigrant status of potential employees.
Some Republicans, including Presidential candidate Nikki Haley, have said e-Verify should be available and utilized throughout the United States.
