(ConservativeSense.com) – Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar has hit back at House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for seeking to remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee by labeling him racist and xenophobic.
McCarthy has said that Omar should not be on the committee due to a history of antisemitism. The White House has defended the controversial Rep. and said she has expertise vital for the committee role.
“As the only African born, not being on the Africa subcommittee is not just an elimination of a unique voice but an elimination of all the voices that have never been heard on a committee on the continent. It is racist, xenophobic, and discriminatory,” Omar wrote on her Twitter account.
Ilhan Omar has a long history of expressing anti-American and anti-Israel sentiments. She has criticized the United States on numerous occasions. In a tweet in 2021, she compared the US to the Taliban, and she described the 9/11 terror attacks on New York City as “some people did something.”
She has accused American politicians of working for Israel and said the American Israel Public Affairs Committee was paying US officials to support the Jewish state. When criticized for this, Omar has responded with allegations of racism or Islamophobia.
Somali-born Omar came to the United States as a refugee in 1995.
Speaker McCarthy may face an uphill struggle to keep Omar away from the Foreign Affairs Committee as several GOP members have spoken out in her defense. Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Victoria Spartz of Indiana have both said they will not support McCarthy on the matter. The Speaker will need to win a majority in the House but it is unclear when a vote might take place.
Some Republicans however have said they agree with Speaker McCarthy. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said, “If people have a propensity to either espouse anti-American or antisemitic views, it raises serious questions.”
