Wellness Guru’s Cult SLAMMED—9 Years!

A judges hand holding a gavel over a wooden desk with law books

A San Francisco ‘wellness’ guru who built a fortune on coerced sexual labor and cult-like abuse just got slapped with 9 years in federal prison, exposing the dark underbelly of progressive self-help scams preying on vulnerable Americans.

Story Snapshot

  • Nicole Daedone, OneTaste founder, sentenced to 9 years for forced labor conspiracy after exploiting trauma survivors with unpaid work and sexual acts for investors.
  • Co-conspirator Rachel Cherwitz convicted; her sentencing pending as prosecutors sought 14 years.
  • Court seizes $12 million from Daedone’s 2017 company sale, funded by years of abuse from 2006-2018.
  • Judge cites lack of remorse and witness intimidation, denying special prison attire requests.
  • Case warns of government overreach risks but validates justice against predatory ‘wellness’ cults eroding family values.

OneTaste’s Coercive Origins

Nicole Daedone founded OneTaste in San Francisco in 2004 as a sexual wellness company promoting orgasmic meditation, a 15-minute clitoral stroking practice pitched to heal sexual trauma and build connections. The organization expanded to cities like New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, and London, functioning as a self-help commune. It targeted young women with trauma histories in the Bay Area’s alternative sex-positive scene, drawing them in with promises of psychological benefits through female orgasm focus. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn’s Eastern District handled the case under human trafficking and civil rights laws.

Forced Labor Scheme Unraveled

From 2006 to May 2018, Daedone and Rachel Cherwitz, former head of sales, ran a coercive operation. They lured vulnerable members with healing pledges, then demanded 7-day weeks of manual and sexual labor for minimal pay. Members performed sexual acts with investors and clients, including BDSM and domestic services for Daedone’s boyfriend and investor Reese Jones, who poured in at least $800,000 from 2007-2011. Tactics included economic pressure, emotional manipulation, psychological indoctrination, surveillance, and threats of ostracism or spiritual ruin to enforce compliance.

Trial Convictions and Sentencing

A Brooklyn federal jury convicted Daedone and Cherwitz in June 2025 after a five-week trial before Judge Diane Gujarati. Prosecutors depicted OneTaste as a predatory cult masquerading as wellness, extracting labor for Daedone’s gain; she sold her stake in 2017 for $12 million. Post-verdict, the judge ordered remand due to witness intimidation by publicist Juda Engelmayer and member Marcus Ratnathicam. On March 18, 2026, the court granted forfeiture of the $12 million proceeds and seized accounts. Daedone received her 9-year sentence on March 30, 2026, despite prosecutors seeking 20 years; the judge noted her lack of remorse and denied non-prison clothing.

Ex-CTO Christopher Hubbard testified, labeling OneTaste a “sex cult” and detailing arrangements for Jones. Cherwitz remains remanded, with sentencing pending under register #62735-510. Daedone is held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.

Justice Served Amid Legal Debates

U.S. Attorney’s Office called Daedone and Cherwitz “grifters who preyed on vulnerable victims.” The defense expressed disappointment, citing novel legal theories for Second Circuit appeal and arguing overreach on consensual spiritual practices. Victims, mostly trauma survivors seeking help, endured retraumatization but gained validation. This unique forced labor case, typically for sweatshops, applies to wellness communes and bolsters anti-trafficking in non-traditional settings while chilling intensive self-help programs.

Short-term, imprisonment and forfeiture recover funds; long-term, appeals may reshape precedents. Socially, it exposes cult dynamics in progressive wellness fads, protecting families from exploitation disguised as empowerment. Conservatives see vindication against moral decay in elite coastal schemes, prioritizing individual liberty over unchecked ‘self-help’ abuses.
