(ConservativeSense.com) – Republicans in North Carolina are forging ahead with plans to outlaw sanctuary counties in the state. A sanctuary county – or city – is one where local authorities refuse to cooperate with federal agencies in tracking down or deporting illegal immigrants.
There are currently six jurisdictions in North Carolina that have given themselves the title. Recently however, Republicans passed HB 10, which will legally require all districts inside North Carolina to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. What this will mean in practice is an obligation is placed on all officials to report known illegal immigrants to ICE agents if they are arrested by local police.
The law will now need to be signed into effect by Democratic Governor Roy Cooper. Should he veto it, however, Republicans have a large enough majority in the House to overturn that veto. The law was sponsored by GOP State Reps. Destin Hall, Brenden Jones, Jason Saine, and Carson Smith.
Meanwhile, in Chicago, newly elected progressive Mayor Brandon Johnson has doubled down on his city’s sanctuary status. On his campaign website, Johnson, who is a supporter of Black Lives Matter campaigns to defund police, said he will “ensure law enforcement does not cooperate with ICE to arrest, detain or deport our migrant neighbors.” He added that the Windy City will provide adequate housing for everyone, including illegal immigrants.
Earlier this year, before she was ousted from office, out-going Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot wrote a letter along with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, asking that no more illegal immigrants be bused to their cities. The letter was sent to Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to object to his stated plan of sending migrants northward to enjoy the generosity of self-described sanctuaries.
“You are sending migrants and families to New York City and Chicago that do not have any ties, family members or community networks to welcome them,” the Mayors stated.
New York is also a self-designated sanctuary city.
