Record Numbers of Migrants Overwhelm El Paso

( – Hundreds of illegal migrants were released on to the streets of downtown El Paso over the weekend. They were part of one of the largest ever crossings into the region from Juarez on Sunday, December 11th. More than 1,500 migrants, said to be from Nicaragua, Peru, and Ecuador, crossed the Rio Grande Sunday night to add to the 1,000s already waiting in migrant processing centers in the region.

The figures further indicate the failure of the Biden administration to tackle the historic levels of illegal immigration since he entered the White House. House Republicans have documented the alarming figures and claim that more than 2.6 million migrants have been apprehended at the southern border in Biden’s time in office, with 234,088 encounters taking place in April 2022 alone – a new record. This figure is up 30% from April 2021 and 1,268% since the same month in 2020.

Meanwhile, a group of Republicans are calling for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The primary argument put forward for impeachment is that Mayorkas has not kept operational control of the border, as required by law. Some have accused him of lying to Congress by repeatedly claiming that he does have control. At a press conference on December 13th, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) said, “Secretary Mayorkas has committed high crimes and misdemeanors. His conduct is not incompetent. It is not negligent. It is willful and intentional.”

Three former Homeland Security Officials, including former acting US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan, joined the House GOP members who gathered for the press conference. Morgan said Mayorkas is the chief architect of the nation’s open border policies and these have allowed drugs to pour in, killing Americans every day. Former US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan and former US Border Patrol chief Rodney Scott also attended the press conference.
