Putin Slams US Policy On Israel-Palestine

(USNewsMag.com) – The eruption of violence in Israel between Israelis and Palestinians shows how US Middle Eastern foreign policy has failed, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the Prime Minister of Iraq, paid a visit to Putin this week and was told by the Russian leader that “many people will agree” with him that the situation in Israel “is a vivid example of the failure” of American foreign policy in the region. Putin claims that the US tried to “monopolize” their international efforts to sustain peace in the Middle East while neglecting to consider each side’s needs while compromising.

Putin accused the US of ignoring the Palestinians’ interests while trying to negotiate peace, including an independent state for Palestinians that would include all of the territory that Israel captured in the War of 1967: Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem as the capital. While some support this as a possible solution, Hamas has rejected all proposals for a two-state solution and wants the entire state of Israel abolished, and many Palestinians agree.

Last weekend, Hamas launched a surprise attack on the Jewish state, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. They attacked civilians in the streets on the Gaza border, invaded a music festival, and shot rockets into Israel. Israel responded by launching a heavy retaliation, launching over 1,000 airstrikes within a few days on the Gaza Strip.

Putin says that he’s been in touch with representatives on both sides of the issue and would like to help resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, American lawmakers are divided on the issue, with most Republicans backing Israel and calling for the US to assist in defending their ally, and most Democrats sympathizing with the Palestinians and calling for a cease-fire.

Some lawmakers, including presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, also claim that Iran was directly involved in planning the attack with Hamas.
