(ConservativeSense.com) – A new poll suggests that most Americans believe President Joe Biden remaining in office is a national security threat due to increasing concerns about his mental fitness.
On Tuesday, July 23, Rasmussen Reports published a survey by the polling company and the Heartland Institute showing that 61% of registered voters agree that Biden’s cognitive abilities present a risk to national security.
The poll found that 46% of respondents said they “strongly agree” that the “recent mental decline” of the president “poses a threat” to US safety and security. Fifteen percent said they “somewhat agreed” with the statement. In contrast, only 36% of respondents disagreed with the statement. The poll involved 2,466 US likely voters along with 5,605 voters in six major battleground states.
According to Rasmussen Reports, The Heartland Institute editorial director Chris Talgo said the numbers show Americans believe Biden’s “mental decline” has grown so “acute” that it presents a risk to the US. He called it “inconceivable” that so many Americans think a president can’t handle his “most fundamental duty.”
Concerns about the 81-year-old’s mental acuity and physical health increased after his debate performance on June 27 against former President Donald Trump, which was widely considered a debacle.
The result of that debate was widespread calls, including from within the Democratic Party, for Biden to drop out of the race. After three weeks of refusing, the president eventually did drop out and formally endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the presumptive Democratic Nominee. The Democratic National Committee is set to vote on whether to name her the nominee on August 1.
Mainly before he dropped out, a Gallup poll showed Biden’s favorability hit a record low of 36% of respondents. He started his presidency in January 2021 with an approval rating of 57%.
