(ConservativeSense.com) – Thousands of people have gathered across the nation to protest against the police following the release of a video showing Memphis officers beating a black man, Tyre Nichols.
Nichols later died and 5 police officers have now been charged with second-degree murder. Despite the fact that all 5 police officers were black, protestors have declared this a racist killing and repeated calls for police to be defunded. Extreme left-wing groups such as the Party for Socialism and Liberation gathered in Times Square, New York, and professed that the killing was part of a “war on black America.” Nichols’ mother said she “hated” the fact that the police officers involved were black.
Police say they pulled Nichols’ vehicle over on January 7th for reckless driving and that he had then tried to run away, which led to the confrontation. The White House has been quick to condemn the incident and President Biden called Nichols’ family to express his condolences. The President said more needs to be done to reform the criminal justice system.
Democrats in Congress have called for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to be revisited. This legislation passed the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives in 2020 but failed in the Senate. Among other measures, it required police to adopt “anti-discrimination” policies.
Criticism of the police has been ramped up by many in the mainstream media, who accuse the black officers of anti-black racism. CNN host Van Jones wrote that even though the Memphis cops involved were black, the killing is still a manifestation of white supremacy and that black officers were just as guilty of viewing black citizens with suspicion. “In black neighborhoods, the phenomenon of brutal black cops singling out young black men for abuse is nothing new,” he wrote.
Many of the nationwide protests were organized by the leftist Anti Police Terror Project that campaigns for the complete abolition of all police forces.
