(ConservativeSense.com) – A video of New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez re-emerged online on Tuesday with critics blasting her as a fraud by seemingly faking an urban accent.
The video, which AOC was criticized for when it first appeared in 2019, was recorded at a speaking event at the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and shows the congresswoman using an unusual accent.
In the video, she was responding to criticism from the audience trying to delegitimize her position as a lawmaker by bringing up her recent employment past as a bartender.
The video started making the rounds again after the Twitter account called “End Wokeness,” which called her a “total fraud,” reposted the footage cut together with more recent footage of AOC criticizing former President Donald Trump in which the accent is completely missing.
Similar and more recent criticisms are now being directed toward expelled Tenessee House Rep. Justin Pearson. After emerging into the spotlight and receiving some praise from Democrats for his oratory skills, his critics have pointed out that there’s something performative about the way Pearson speaks as if he’s trying to emulate the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
These criticisms were validated after a student government campaign ad video from Pearson’s university days emerged showing a very different Pearson. In that video, not only were his 1960s-style afro and glasses absent, but so was the MLK-style preacher accent.
Responding to the critics of her 2019 speech, AOC tweeted about being born and raised in the Bronx and explaining away the accent as something that happens when she’s “fired up” rather than being feigned. She accused the political right of distorting and deflecting and said that it’s “hurtful to see how every aspect of my life is weaponized against me, yet somehow asserted as false at the same time.”
