(ConservativeSense.com) – The topic of artificial intelligence (AI) systems is becoming common parlance these days. Like it or not, the technology continues to be developed, and the CEO of the AI chatbot ChatGPT thinks it will either turn out well or result in humanity’s destruction.
Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is an AI chatbot that was developed by the research laboratory OpenAI. It was released in November 2022 and, by January 2023, had become the fastest-growing software app for consumers in history, prompting Meta, Google, and other companies to develop competing products.
The OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, discussed the pros and cons of AI systems in an interview back in January. Altman was asked what he believed the best-case and worst-case scenarios would be like as AI is further developed. He said the best-case scenario “is so unbelievably good” that it’s hard for him to imagine it, adding that he pictures “unbelievable abundance” for humanity and “systems that can help resolve deadlocks… improve all aspects of reality” and let humans live their “best lives.”
As for the worst-case scenario, Altman said it could be “lights out” for humans, that he’s worried about “accidental misuse” of AI systems, and that it isn’t possible “to overstate the importance of AI safety.” Critics of ChatGPT believe it can be abused and used to scam people, plagiarize content, launch cyberattacks, and spread misinformation.
In another interview, Altman stated that he understands why people may be concerned about the risks of AI. He said what keeps him up most at night “is the hypothetical idea” that launching Chat GPT may have been a bad idea.
In March, an open letter published by the Future of Life Institute warned about the potential impacts of AI and even called for a temporary pause on the development of AI systems until proper regulatory protocols and safeguards could be developed and put into place. The letter has amassed over 3,000 signatures among the scientific and tech worlds, including those of Space X founder and Twitter owner Elon Musk, as well as the co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak.
