Key Republican In Favor Of Impeaching Mayorkas

(ConservativeSense.com) – As the calls to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas continue to ramp up, more Republican lawmakers are throwing their support behind the proposal, bringing it closer to unified support from their conference. The latest is a key moderate GOP House member, Rep. John James of Michigan.

James, a representative from a major swing district in Michigan, which former President Donald Trump narrowly won in 2020, told Fox News reporters that Mayorkas “must be impeached and tried for treason.”

The congressman claims that “evidence will prove” the Homeland Security Secretary is “an accessory to the poisoning of millions” in the US, “complicit in a modern-day slave trade,” and a failure to secure the border through “sustained and willful betrayal of the public trust.” James said that Mayorkas’ actions in office constitute “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

A week before James’ remarks, House Republicans set the process of impeachment into motion on Wednesday, Jan. 10, after the Homeland Security Committee gathered for its first hearing to discuss Mayorkas’ future. Democrats condemned the move by the GOP as politically motivated, but Republicans believe their decision is justified by Mayorkas’ mishandling of the immigration crisis at the US-Mexico border. December 2023 saw a record number of encounters, surpassing 300,000.

The only way Republicans will get an impeachment vote to pass the House floor will be to unite as many conference members as possible because the move will most likely not receive any support from the other side of the aisle. This means that moderates such as James are crucial to get on board.

Along with 60 other House Republicans, James visited the border at the beginning of January. After his visit, the congressman told reporters that, although he believes the issue of immigration is “an economic and moral imperative” for the nation, what they are talking about right now is border security. James said Border Patrol agents “are underfunded… underappreciated,” and “at their wit’s end” managing the crisis.
