(ConservativeSense.com) – Following the sudden withdrawal of President Joe Biden from the 2024 presidential contest, he chose Vice President Kamala Harris as the best person to take his place and she delivered a speech this past week, during which she said a few words to honor him.
On Sunday, July 21, Biden’s team posted a letter announcing that he would no longer seek reelection and then a follow-up post endorsing Harris to replace him. The next day, on Monday, Harris delivered her first public remarks during a ceremony for student-athletes on the White House South Lawn.
The New York Post described the short speech by Harris as a “political eulogy” for Biden, who backed out of the race after maintaining for weeks that he would not drop out of the contest. She kicked off her remarks by saying “a few words” about the president, whose accomplishments and legacy she said goes “unmatched in modern history.” She then told the audience they “may clap” with her signature laugh.
During her speech, she also spoke about Biden’s son Beau, reminiscing about the time she spent with him and how he would tell her stories about his father. She also said he was on the mend after getting sick last week.
Polls in the past have indicated that Harris is among the most unpopular vice presidents. However, recent polling shows that she seems to be catching up to Trump, coming in at just one point behind him in a New York Times/Sienna College survey.
Other recent polls matching her head-to-head with Trump still show Trump in the lead, and she will only have a couple of months to close that gap before November. She reportedly secured the majority of delegate support in only two days and the Democratic National Committee is set to vote on August 1.
