Johnson Slams Dems Over Noncitizen Vote Debacle

(ConserativeSense.com) – After House Democrats joined with their GOP colleagues to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana criticized all Democrats who opposed the legislation preventing noncitizens from participating in federal elections.

On Wednesday, July 10, five House Democrats united with House Republicans to pass the act in a vote of 221-198. The legislation now moves to the Democrat-controlled Senate, but it is likely to fall flat.

After the vote, Johnson chided the Democrats who did not vote for the bill, claiming that many of them “want illegals to participate” in federal elections and that “there’s no other conclusion” to be drawn. The speaker said that when the White House announced intentions to veto it, they handed US elections over to the “illegal aliens that have come here.”

President Joe Biden has also promised to veto the bill, and the White House released a statement preceding the vote. The Biden administration claimed that the SAVE Act would not do anything to help “safeguard” US elections and would “make it much harder” for eligible voters to participate while increasing their chances of being “purged from voter rolls.” Ultimately, the White House believes because “it is extraordinarily rare” for noncitizens to violate federal election laws, new legislation against it was unnecessary.

This call by the president makes it more likely that Democrats in the Senate will not side with those five who supported the legislation in the House.

Johnson maintains that the legislation is “common sense” and is intended to “make sure” elections are free of flaws. The House Speaker then said that every Democrat who opposes the bill should be questioned about “how in the world they can justify” that decision. Johnson says that noncitizens registering to vote is “a serious problem” and that Congress must prevent federal elections from being jeopardized.

Those favoring the bill want to ensure proper vetting is taking place during the registration process and at the polls.
