Jim Jordan Issues Subpoena to Attorney General Over Congressional Spying

(ConservativeSense.com) – House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a subpoena to Attorney General Merrick Garland as part of his investigation into Justice Department subpoenas used to obtain the private communications of Congress members and their staff.

The investigation involves former Trump staffer Carter Page, who was placed under surveillance by the Department of Justice in 2017 using a FISA warrant as part of its probe into the Donald Trump-Russia scandal. The DOJ later admitted there was “insufficient predication” to surveil Mr. Page. Jordan first wrote to the DOJ on October 31 and then again on November 28, but having received no sufficient response, Jordan said he must now “resort to compulsory process.”

The Republican accuses the Justice Department of using its “immense law-enforcement authority” to search for and gather communications from Congress staff “who were conducting constitutional oversight of the Department’s investigative actions.”

As chair of the Congressional Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, Jim Jordan believes the government utilizes federal law enforcement agencies, including the Justice Department and the FBI, to persecute conservatives and Republicans for the benefit of Democrats.

The subcommittee was established in January 2023 and was first devised following the FBI raid on the Florida home of President Trump in August 2022. Following the raid, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who would become House Speaker, stated on Twitter that if Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives, they would investigate the federal government’s role in the raid and the behaviors of federal agencies more broadly.

McCarthy wrote, “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.” Fellow GOP Congress members held him at his word, and when he was elected to the Speaker’s chair, the subcommittee was formed.

Among the allegations aimed at the government was its apparent collusion with Twitter to censor stories, including the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election.
