The interview, parts of which were leaked on Wednesday, was recorded shortly before Carlson was suddenly fired from Fox News Network in April. Carlson first mentioned the existence of the interview while speaking to comedian, actor, and podcaster Russell Brand during his first official interview after being fired.
During the conversation, Sund told Carlson he was disappointed in the way intelligence suggesting something would happen on Capitol Hill that day was handled by former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Sund said if intelligence was being reported “correctly” and if he was allowed to do his job as police chief, “we wouldn’t be here today.” He added that the way Jan. 6 played out “didn’t have to happen.”
Even more astonishingly, Sund said that there “appears to be a coverup,” a very serious statement to be made by someone with thirty years of law enforcement experience, about three of which Sund spent as Chief of Capitol Police. He emphasized that he’s “Not a conspiracy theorist,” yet said when one looks “at the information and intelligence they had,” including the military, “it’s all watered down.”
According to Sund, not only was he not provided with proper intelligence, but he was also “denied” National Guard support prior to the events and “for 71 minutes” while Capitol Police were “under attack.”
The two also discussed the fact that it seems more like intelligence was deliberately hidden than a failure to communicate. Sund then asked if it’s possible that people in power “wanted something to happen” on January 6 and that it’s “not a far stretch” to imagine the possibility.
