(ConservativeSense.com) – Republicans have said they will target “wokeness” in the military as a money-saving measure. GOP House members are looking at cuts as they prepare to negotiate raising the federal debt ceiling – which reached its limit of $31.4 trillion in January. The White House wants to increase the ceiling but will need cross-party support. The Republicans will only give this if the Biden administration agrees to spending cuts. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other Republicans have said “wokeness” in the military is to be one focus for spending cuts.
Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said, “We’re going to cut the money that’s being spent on wokeism, we’re going to cut legacy programs, we’re going to cut a lot of waste.”
The type of wokeness likely to be targeted will include diversity and environmental protection measures. Prior to the midterm elections last November, when Republicans won control of the House of Representatives, they promised to “aggressively” root out woke ideas from across the US military.
Concern about left-wing philosophies dominating the armed services has been expressed by some on the Republican benches for years. In 2021, a row broke out about the teaching of so-called critical race theory in the military. This extreme-left view purports that society is comprised of the oppressed and the oppressors and white Americans are engaged in the active oppression of black people. At a House Armed Services Committee hearing, Florida Republican Rep. Mike Waltz expressed outrage that American troops were attending seminars entitled “Understanding Whiteness and White Rage.” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley defended the seminars and described the Capitol Hill riots of January 2021 as an example of “white rage.”
“What is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America? What caused that? I want to find out,” Milley said.
