(ConservativeSense.com) – Republicans in the House of Representatives are increasingly on board with proposals to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The board responsible for initiating impeachments, the House Judiciary Committee, is Republican-led and has expressed alarm at the situation on the US southern border.
Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, Rep. Ben Cline from Virginia, and Rep. Barry Moore from Alabama have all added their names to the list who want Mayorkas removed from the crucial post. Secretary Mayorkas has overseen record numbers of illegal entries to the US while continuing to claim that the border is secure. Under his watch, more than 5 million people have entered illegally, as well as another 1.5 million “gotaways.”
Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan also said he believes Mayorkas deserves to be held to account for his failures. In addition, homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TX) is said to be conducting a fact-finding exercise. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters he called on Mayorkas to resign months ago. Finally, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) clarified that he too favors impeachment.
Secretary Mayorkas defended his record on CNN, telling Dana Bash he is focused on the tasks he has in front of him, including the adverse actions of China, North Korea, and Iran, as well as extreme weather events. In a separate interview on May 14th, he said the number of illegal immigrants had dropped since the expiration of Title 42.
In February, Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs said Mayorkas had “violated his oath of office” and described him as an imminent threat to the safety of the United States. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene supported Biggs and added that President Biden must be held accountable and should also face impeachment. Congressman Biggs filed articles of impeachment against Mr. Mayorkas, and when asked on May 16th if he intended to pursue the matter, he said his plan was “full steam ahead.”
