Guards Brought BACK – School Shooting Incident Leads To Change!

(ConservativeSense.com) – A shooting at Denver’s East High School has prompted authorities there to reintroduce armed resource officers. The shooting took place on March 22nd when two members of staff were targeted by a suspect named as Austin Lyle, who is 17 years old. Neither staff member was fatally wounded.

Denver Public Schools, the local education authority, had voted in 2020 to remove armed resource officers from campuses. In light of the latest incident, however, this decision will now be overturned.

When news of the shooting broke, Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper took to Twitter to say that he was closely following developments. In response, Gun Owners of America tweeted, “ Actually, the school district removed School Resource Officers (a.k.a. good guys with guns) from the school in 2021. That’s a change that clearly DID NOT work. Let’s empower teachers & parents to defend our kids as well!”

Denver Public Schools (DPS) superintendent Alex Marrero appeared to agree as he soon announced that armed officers would again be placed at the school.

The debate around the presence of armed police on school campuses has been raging for years. Shooting incidents at schools first exploded into public consciousness in 1999 with the Columbine tragedy in Denver. The idea of arming teachers was floated following the massacre at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut in 2012, and again in 2018 when 17 people were murdered by Nikolas Cruz at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Miami.

Proponents of the idea include Donald Trump who said that a teacher could have shot Cruz “before he knew what happened.” Most teachers, according to polls, disagreed with Trump and would concede only to have guns on campus if they were in the hands of law enforcement officers.

Following the shooting at Uvalde, Texas, in 2022, Senator Ted Cruz spoke out in favor of maintaining an armed presence in educational institutions. He said this was the most effective deterrent. He added that all schools, including elementary schools, should employ armed officers.
