(ConservativeSense.com) – Left-wing activists and commentators immediately took to social media to celebrate the death of Pat Robertson. The evangelical preacher died on June 8th at the age of 93. No cause of death was made public, but a statement from William Hathaway, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Regent University, which Mr. Robertson founded, said, “Dr. Robertson was a globally-renowned leader, broadcaster, philanthropist, educator, author, accomplished businessman, and – most importantly – a faithful servant of God.”
Statements of remembrance on social media were less flattering, however. Many of the critical posts focused on the fact that Robertson’s death occurred during Pride Month, with one poster writing, “The fact that Pat Robertson went to Hell during Pride Month makes me almost believe there is a God..or Hell.” Another Twitter user posted a quote from Clarence Darrow: “I have never killed a man but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.”
Pat Robertson was a longtime televangelist and broadcaster who founded the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1960. Born in Virginia in 1930, Robertson was raised by his mother, a nurse, and his father, a Democratic Congressman. A. Willis Robertson served in the House of Representatives from 1933 to 1946 and then in the Senate from 1946 to 1966.
The younger Robertson did not follow in his father’s Democratic political footsteps but chose the Republican Party. He served as president of the conservative networking and policy group, the Council for National Policy.
In 1986, he announced he would run for President of the United States if three million people volunteered. They did, and he raised millions of dollars from supporters. However, he dropped out in the primaries despite a relatively strong showing in the early states, including a second-place finish in Iowa.
His wife Adelia, a beauty queen from Ohio whom he married in 1954, died in 2022. They had four children together. Robertson’s son Tim has taken over the running of the Christian Broadcasting Network.
