(ConservativeSense.com) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom bowed out of delivering a State of the State address this year.
Newsom claims he’s frustrated with teleprompters due to his dyslexia and would prefer to do a statewide tour throughout the next month instead, highlighting his upcoming policy goals.
Dyslexia is a learning disability that makes it more difficult to read and to perform activities related to reading, which has made scripted speeches more difficult for Newsom, which is why the governor rarely doesn’t often rely on notes during public appearances, preferring to memorize facts and figures instead. For his 2022 speech, Newsom held it in a larger auditorium in Sacramento partly so a larger screen could be used for his teleprompter while addressing lawmakers.
Newsom is breaking with tradition by choosing not to give a State of the State address, which is standard practice for governors across the country, mirroring the president’s State of the Union address given to Congress annually. Every year, the governor is required by the California Consitution to provide a report on the conditions of the state to the state Legislature.
The Democratic governor is believed to be a potential presidential candidate for the 2024 election, and possibly the number one challenger to President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination. Neither Newsom nor Biden has yet announced campaigns.
Meanwhile, another governor is already well on his way toward challenging former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024. Ron DeSantis gave his State of the State address on Tuesday, telling Florida lawmakers that they “ain’t seen nothing yet.”
In what appears to be a pre-cursor campaign, DeSantis is already traveling to other states to promote his new book where he lays out an argument that his policies in Florida are a roadmap for what needs to be done across the nation.
DeSantis recently visited Newsom’s own state where he addressed California conservatives at an event in Simi Valley, noting the mass exodus of Americans “from states governed by leftist politicians” [such as Newsom] in order to settle in predominantly red states like Florida and Texas.
