(ConservativeSense.com) – New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) complained about a parody account on Twitter and was immediately mocked. Parody accounts are common on the platform. They are used to mock and satirize celebrities and political figures and are mostly ignored by the joke’s target. AOC, however, appears to be taking the matter more seriously than most.
She tweeted, “FYI there’s a fake account on here impersonating me and going viral. The Twitter CEO has engaged it, boosting visibility. It is releasing false policy statements and gaining spread.” She was immediately ridiculed by other Twitter users, some of whom said she was concerned that people would be unable to tell which account was which.
“The AOC team is worried that a parody account is being taken seriously and mistaken for the real AOC. Think about that,” one comment read. Another said, “Parody of elected officials is allowed here, this isn’t Ukraine, you know.”
The satirical account ironically vastly increased its following after the Congresswoman complained, and it later showed a screenshot of Ocasio-Cortez blocking the account.
The Democrat later threatened to quit the platform when Elon Musk responded to a tweet from the parody account stating that she had a crush on the billionaire. Musk replied with an emoji of a flame.
The Congresswoman has long criticized Musk and previously said his decision to remove the verification ticks on the platform would cause confusion.
The “blue ticks,” as they’re known, were applied to the accounts of public figures to confirm that the person in question genuinely operated the account. Musk removed these but offered to allow people to keep them for a charge of $8 per month.
AOC mocked Musk for this and tweeted that she was laughing at the prospect of a billionaire charging people $8 for a tick, despite his apparent commitment to free speech. The move by Musk caused chaos on the platform as impersonators bought blue ticks and posed as other people.
