(ConservativeSense.com) – A Virginia firefighter on Tuesday walked away unharmed when an explosion at a Fairfax County building under evacuation erupted after he opened the door, the Washington Times reported.
Fire and rescue workers were on the scene at a shopping center in Bailey’s Crossroads Tuesday afternoon, responding to a utility emergency that required evacuating the building.
Officials with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department did not say whether the emergency was related to electrical or gas lines or another cause.
A spokeswoman with the utility company Dominion Energy told WUSA9 the explosion was due to a fire in a faulty line of the underground wires powering the building. The fire was carried up into the building, and when the firefighter opened the door, the rush of oxygen into the structure caused an explosive burst of fire.
The explosion was captured on video and posted on social media by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
The footage shows the door to the building being opened, followed by the blast.
According to Fire and Rescue, the unnamed firefighter was unharmed, and no other firefighters or civilians in the vicinity were injured in the blast.
Mitchell Clark from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue told WUSA9 that investigators are looking into the cause and origin of the fire, and more information on the blast is expected to be released in the coming days.
