(ConservativeSense.com) – Donald Trump is set to return to mainstream social media as bans by Facebook and Instagram are to be lifted. Trump was suspended from all major platforms following the riots on Capitol Hill on January 6th, 2021. The platforms blamed the President for the incident and he has been warned in advance that he will be suspended again if he commits further “offenses.”
Nick Clegg, former left-wing UK Deputy Prime Minister and now president of global affairs for Meta, the company that owns Facebook, said that new guardrails will be in place to deter repeat offenses.
“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying – the good, the bad, and the ugly – so they can make informed choices at the ballot box,” Meta said in a statement announcing its decision.
Trump has not said whether he intends to return to the platforms and has been using his own Truth Social since his ban. In response to the announcement, he said such a thing should never have happened to a sitting President. He added that Facebook had lost billions of dollars as a result of his ban.
He has already been reinstated on Twitter but has not posted there since January 8th, 2021. He has more than 87 million followers and used the platform frequently to communicate with his supporters during his run for the White House in 2016.
The social media giants have consistently been accused of political bias by conservatives as violent left-wing groups like Antifa, or international terrorist organizations like Hamas, have enjoyed continuous access to the platforms while a sitting US President was banned. Twitter has come under fire recently for allegedly colluding with the FBI to prevent distribution of negative stories about President Biden in the run-up to the 2020 Presidential election.
House Republicans have vowed to investigate any such collusion and have accused the White House of the weaponization of federal agencies for political gain.
