(ConservativeSense.com) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned Republican voters who are concerned about abortion to watch out for his rival, former President Donald Trump, who he says will sell them out on the issue.
On Sunday, Trump made his first network news appearance since leaving the White House in 2021 on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” During the interview, the Republican frontrunner criticized the six-week abortion ban put in place by states like Florida as too strict.
Trump was pressed during the interview on his thoughts on a 15-week ban on abortion by the federal government. The former president wouldn’t name a specific number of weeks but instead shifted towards giving himself credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court. Trump says he is the one who gave “bargaining power” back to pro-life Americans on the issue of abortion, which hasn’t been seen for half a century.
DeSantis appeared on Radio Iowa on Monday for an interview during which he reacted to comments made by Trump on abortion. DeSantis gave Trump credit for appointing the judges needed in the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade; among other accomplishments, the Sunshine State governor criticized Trump for promising to secure a bipartisan deal on how long of a window should be allowed for an abortion.
Ultimately, DeSantis believes Trump will do what he must to “make the Democrats happy” and that he’s “preparing” to sell out pro-lifers.
Trump criticized DeSantis’ decision to sign a ban on abortions after six weeks, which he called a “terrible thing” and a “mistake,” before turning to criticize the Democrats for pushing the limit to six to eight months. DeSantis responded on Radio Iowa to Trump’s comment, stating that it “is not terrible” to protect “babies with heartbeats.”
Abortion will certainly be a deciding issue for most Americans in 2024, in the primaries as well as the general election.
