(ConservativeSense.com) – The House Democrats are desperate for more Supreme Court control, proposing legislation for term limits for justices and claiming they want to “rebalance” the institution and prevent “extreme partisanship.”
With a majority rule of 6-3, the Supreme Court stopped President Joe Biden’s plan to forgive student loans, which would have erased more than $400 billion in debt, determining that it wasn’t authorized under federal law.
The Democratic lawmakers pointed out the extremely high cost of going to college, which has tripled since 1980, and that borrowers collectively owe over $1.6 million in student debt while most people continue to live paycheck to paycheck.
In response to the decision, Democratic Reps. Don Beyer of Virginia and Ro Khanna of California reintroduced a proposal to set term limits on Supreme Court Justices.
Khanna said the decision “will put many hardworking Americans at risk” of defaulting on their loans and will result in “a disaster” for the economy. She also said it shows that the “justices have become partisan” and are “out of step” with the public. The point of proposing term limits, according to Khanna, is “to rebalance the court” by stopping “extreme partisanship.”
Beyer accused the court of destroying “historic protections for reproductive rights,” referring to the rolling back of Roe v. Wade last year, which put laws about abortion back into the hands of state governments. Since then, multiple states have banned or heavily restricted abortion nationwide.
The latest victory of the conservative majority Supreme Court was the decision that affirmative action policies implemented in university admissions processes violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
It’s unlikely the Democratic legislation will make it past the Senate. The effort demonstrates that the Republican-majority Supreme Court, which former President Donald Trump helped put into place, is a major thorn in their side.
