(ConservativeSense.com) – After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told the federal government to either help with the immigration crisis or stay out of the way, some Democrats are calling on President Joe Biden to step in and take control of the Texas National Guard.
Democratic Rep. Greg Casar and other Democratic lawmakers in Texas are accusing Abbott of emulating former President Donald Trump. Casar called Abbott’s actions “political stunts” and accused the governor of using “inflammatory language” to push a personal agenda. He also accused Abbott of “violating the Constitution” as well as putting American citizens and “asylum seekers” in danger.
On Wednesday, Jan. 24, Abbott issued a statement in defiance of the Biden administration’s lawsuits against the Lone Star State and reaffirming the state’s right to self-defense. The Texas governor claims that the federal government broke its pact with the individual states in the Union. In the letter, he pointed out the “constitutional duty” of the Executive Branch to protect each state by enforcing federal laws regarding immigration that are already on the books and that by failing to do so, have forced Texas to take matters into its own hands.
Abbott accused Biden of refusing to enforce existing immigration laws and even of violating those laws himself while punishing states for trying to defend their own borders. The state currently faces legal battles for installing a buoy barrier and net in the Rio Grande River, installing razor wire along the border to deter illegal entry, and for passing legislation that allows Texas law enforcement to arrest and deport illegal border crossers.
Casar’s remarks were inspired by fellow Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro, who also suggested that the president seize control of the National Guard in Texas. Former Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke also rebuked the governor’s decision to use the Texas National Guard “to defy a Supreme Court ruling.”
Despite the backlash from Democrats, others are rallying behind Abbott. Aside from Trump, Texas has received support from 25 state governors, all Republicans. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed to continue helping Texas secure the border, and even Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced his full support for Texas.
