(ConservativeSense.com) – Conservatives labeled President Biden an “election denier” after he referred to Terry McAuliffe, who was defeated by Glenn Youngkin in the Virginia gubernatorial election, as the “real governor” of Virginia. The President introduced himself as the husband of Jill Biden and the running mate of Kamala Harris when he spoke at an event highlighting abortion issues in the Old Dominion State.
Conservative online voices immediately took to social media to mock the president for denying election results, which is, one writer wrote, “the biggest threat to our democracy.” A Twitter user noted, “Subverting democracy, denying elections, is basically insurrection.”
Many conservatives and Republicans believe that Democrats and the media apply different standards to them. For example, following her 2016 defeat to President Trump, Hillary Clinton referred to him several times as an illegitimate president and said the election was “stolen.”
Similarly, in 2000, Al Gore lost to George W. Bush following a contentious Florida recount, and Democrats, including Terry McAuliffe, claimed that victory was “stolen” from Gore.
Arizona firebrand Kari Lake has collected 150 examples of Democrats alleging that elections were rigged. She said, “It’s OK for Democrats to question elections, but it’s not OK for Republicans.” Lake provides an example of White House Press Secretary Jean-Pierre tweeting, “Reminder: Brian Kemp stole the gubernatorial election from Georgians and Stacey Abrams.”
Lake and other conservatives say they are furious at what they see as blunt double standards because Donald Trump’s election denial prompted accusations of insurrection and led to his impeachment and attempts to prevent him from running for a second White House term.
President Biden recently lashed out at Trump again for refusing to accept 2020 results and called on all candidates standing in this year’s elections to publicly accept the outcome, whatever it may be. He said to do otherwise was the “path to chaos.” He declared election denial “unprecedented, unlawful, and un-American.”
Polls show that almost half of Americans do not always trust election results.
