(ConservativeSense.com) – The Republican National Convention (RNC) hosted a series of guest speakers, including figures such as Amber Rose and Hulk Hogan. Meanwhile, some of the guest speakers were the families of soldiers killed during the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Thirteen American service members died alongside 60 Afghans during a suicide bombing at an airport in Kabul during the hectic evacuation of American troops in August 2021. The withdrawal from Afghanistan was considered by many to be a catastrophic failure of the Biden administration.
Family members of some of those 13 service members revived this low point of President Joe Biden’s term at the RNC, where they took the stage to speak about their experiences. The families spoke highly of Trump. One speaker, Christy Shamblin, said Trump spent hours with her and had empathy for her grief, whereas Biden “refused to recognize” the sacrifice of the service members who died.
Shamblin is the mother-in-law of deceased Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee. She told the crowd of attendees and delegates that the former president “knew all of our children’s names” and “all of their stories.” According to her, she had expected to meet an “arrogant politician” in Trump, but instead met someone “compassionate” who made time for the grieving families.
Gee’s aunt, Cheryl Juels, who also spoke at the event, slammed Biden for calling the Afghanistan withdrawal a success and accused him of forgetting about the deaths of “our children.” Meanwhile, the mother of the deceased Marine Corporal Hunter Lopez took the stage in tears to speak about her son and the “silence” from the Biden administration.
During the speeches, each of the 13 fallen American service members was named in a moment of remembrance, and the crowd began to repeat each name back.
Republicans have heavily criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the families of the Americans who died in the process have remained active in the political spotlight since. They have done numerous interviews and have appeared before Congress seeking answers for what happened to their loved ones.
Biden has defended his administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan in the past, and a review from 2023 placed much of the blame on decisions Trump made during his own time in office. A review released by the Defense Department in April 2024 identified the Kabul airport bomber as Abdul Rahman al-Logari while also indicating that the attack was not preventable.
