(ConservativeSense.com) – Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson attended the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and was photographed with a freshly bandaged Donald Trump. Mr. Johnson attended the event to participate in a panel discussion on the UK and the impact of the US elections on that country. Johnson later told reporters that he spoke to Trump about the Ukraine war and felt assured that the Republican would “exercise leadership necessary to protect democracy against aggression.” The former Conservative leader wrote on social media that Trump was “in superb form” and had exhibited “courage, resilience, and sheer indomitability” following the attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Several European leaders, however, have expressed concern about how Donald Trump will deal with Europe, specifically the Ukraine war and US membership of NATO. These worries escalated when Trump announced his Vice Presidential pick, JD Vance. Mr. Vance has previously said that “the American security blanket has allowed European security to atrophy,” and Europeans must “wake up” to the fact that the US will turn its attention toward East Asia.
German MP Nils Schmid told reporters in Berlin that while he is confident the US will remain a NATO member, Mr. Vance’s inclusion makes a future Trump administration “unpredictable” and “more isolationist.”
Similarly, several commentators have described the Vance appointment as a “disaster” for Ukraine and, by extension, the European Union, which depends on NATO for defense and has vociferously backed Ukraine and vocally condemned and vilified Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
The concerns are based on Vance’s previous positions on the war, including his part in opposing a Ukraine aid bill earlier this year. During the Congressional debate, Vance said Kyiv cannot depend on American “blank checks” indefinitely. Speaking to reporters at a recent security conference in Munich, Vance added that the US does not have the manufacturing capacity to support a European ground war and asked, “How long is this expected to go on?”
