(ConservativeSense.com) – There has been another weekend of violence in Chicago, with more than 30 shootings over two days. On the weekend of September 24–25, three people were shot dead, including 86-year-old Charles Hobson, who was shot by thieves who stole his truck. He died later in the hospital. Neighbors say they saw police taking suspects into custody, but officers would not confirm the details of any arrests and said investigations were ongoing.
The second victim was a 40-year-old man who died when shot in the chest by an unknown assailant. A 24-year-old was killed while sitting in his car, also by an unidentified gunman.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that there have been 433 murders in the Windy City since the start of 2023.
News of violent weekends in Chicago is common; throughout 2023, several made alarming headlines. In June, one such weekend saw 75 shootings, with 13 fatalities. In July, there were 65 incidents and five deaths over a 3-day period, and in August, 40 people were shot and seven were killed, including a 14-year-old. Rayjohn Harshaw was shot in the head and chest a day before starting high school. “They took him from the world because he was going to be somebody,” his aunt said.
Chicago’s left-wing mayor, Brandon Johnson, says his administration will take a “holistic” approach to violent crime. During his election campaign, he spoke in favor of law enforcement cuts, and his response to a weekend of rioting by young people in April was to demand that those involved not be held accountable. He tweeted, “It is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their communities.”
Mayor Johnson attributes crime to a lack of opportunity and cites low taxation and investment as the primary culprits. “It’s that type of restraint on our budget that has caused the type of disinvestment that has led to poverty, and, of course, that has led to violence,” he said.
