Arkansas Governor Declares War on Woke

( – The new Governor of Arkansas Sarah Huckabee Sanders has declared war on woke in her first few days in office by banning critical race theory (CRT) in the state’s schools. Sanders has also banned use of the phrase “Latinx” in official state communications.

Critical race theory is an extreme-left ideology that claims all white people are oppressors and that America is built on the back of black slavery. Its teaching in schools has drawn condemnation from across the nation. Sen. Ted Cruz for example said the theory itself is racist, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also banned its teaching in schools.

Last year, parents in Virginia gathered to protest against CRT in schools in Louden County, which brought the issue to national attention. A speaker at the protest, Ian Prior, said teachers and school officials were more concerned with politics than with doing their jobs. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) went on to prohibition CRT teaching in schools.

In Arkansas, Governor Sanders signed an executive order that states, “Schools must educate, not indoctrinate students; and their education policies must protect children and prepare them to enter the workforce… Teachers and school administrators should teach students how to think—not what to think.”

In a similar move, the new Arkansas Governor has banned use of the word “Latinx” in official documents. She has done so by executing an order entitled “Executive Order to Respect the Latino Community by Eliminating Culturally Insensitive words from Official Use in Government.” It includes the text, “it is the policy of the Governor’s administration to prohibit the use of culturally insensitive words for official state government business.”

“Latinx” is a term widely adopted by many LGBTQ activists as a gender-neutral replacement for Latino or Latina. It has been criticized as unpronounceable in Spanish and as insulting to the Spanish language.
